Copa de S.M. El Rey 2004

On January 8, the round of sixteen of the 66. championship Copa de S.M. El Rey took place on a hunting ground between Torrijos and Barcience, close to Toledo. Again, thousands of spectators came to see the 16 best Galgos of the year running. Three dogs already participated last time: Tara, the winner of the last year, Salada, who got the "David Salamanca Trophy" for the most typical Galgo, and also the female Cristalera.

On January 17, during the final, Tara was able to prove what an exceptional female she is: she won the "Copa de S.M. El Rey" for the second time and in addition, she got the "David Salamanca Trophy".

We were there together with our friend Susanna Sáez and here we present a selection of our photos...

Three females, which already participated last year: Salada, Tara...
...and Cristalera:
The trailla is put on...
...and the mano starts.
The soltador walks ahead with the Galgos...
...followed by the spectators and photographers...
...and runs off, if a hare jumps up.
As soon as the whistle of a judge sounds, the soltador releases the dogs...
...and the Galgos chase after the hare...
...always observed by the judges...
...who at the end signal, which of the two Galgos won.

The Galgos, the exquisite Spanish horses as well as the atmosphere and the ambience make the Copa del Rey a very attractive event. Unfortunately, one has to mention that behind this nice front sad things are hiding. Those young Galgos, which are qualified for the round of sixteen, will surely enjoy a safe and comfortable life. But many Galgos are prepared for the competition and are tested at the beginning of the hunting season. And some of them will be released or - sometimes barbarously - killed if they are not successful.
