Cai's first Coursing (by Steve Garth)
Cai had his first official hunt yesterday. I was unsure how well he
would perform. He loves running in the hills here with Sunny our lurcher but I wasn't sure
whether he would focus on hunting the jack rabbit or his fellow hunting dogs. (The jack
rabbits here are about the same size as hares (hasen) in Germany. They are a lot faster
but less agile. However the fields here are much bigger than in Germany).
We usually have two runs a day. In the first Cai was last out of the
slips but soon took the lead and pressured the rabbit all the way. He eventually turned
it into the blue dog, a saluki, which got the kill and Cai assisted. The 3 rd dog was a
whippet. The hunt lasted 2.5 minutes, a long hunt. In the second hunt Cai was running
with 2 saluki's. Again he took the lead and was turning the rabbit all the time. He ran
into a low depression and stopped dead. The other two dogs did the same. The judges were
unsighted and couldn't see whether Cai or the others had killed the rabbit or whether it
went down a hole somewhere.
Each time after the hunts Cai came straight back and was panting only
a little. I knew he had a lot of stamina and agility but I didn't know he had the kind of
speed that he displayed on Sunday. He is an incredibly fit and powerful dog now. And the
winner on the day was…………….
Cai!!! He got best in field and 3 rosettes, First place, Novice (the
first time he had ever run) and Assisted Kill. Everyone was so impressed with his
performance as I was . They had never seen Galgo's perform before. I was very proud
of him. More importantly he really enjoyed it so I'm going to do a lot more with him.
I run Cai and Sunny with the
TCC.
It's a small club and they are a very good bunch of people that always have a lot of fun.
I'm going to try and get Cai registered with
NOFCA. This is
a much bigger club but very slow. Galgo's are not registered as an acceptable rare breed
with them. That means I have to submit an application, they review it in their spring
meeting and then vote on it in their summer meeting. If I submit now then he could be
running with them this time next year. |
